Free Comic Book Day Saturday (and other stories)

Tomorrow, comic book stores around the world will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day, which is exactly what it sounds like: Participating comics stores will be giving away free samples to anyone who stops by while supplies last.

There's a special addition to this year's FCBD celebrations: As part of their great webcomics show, The Henry is hosting a free cereal breakfast to kick off your day of free-comic-book-gathering. (Find more information about that right here.) After that, you can locate participating comics shops by picking up an issue of The Stranger—find their information on pages 22 and 23—or by going to the official Free Comic Book Day site.

From the AP:  Gov. Chris Gregoire opened an emergency fund Thursday to help contain a spreading whooping-cough epidemic, and officials urged residents to get vaccinated against an illness that particularly threatens infants. 

Gregoire is making $90,000 in crisis cash available to help strengthen a public-awareness campaign about the need for the pertussis vaccination. The state Department of Health is already looking to spend about $200,000 on the effort.

"Pertussis is very serious, especially for babies," Secretary of Health Mary Selecky said in a statement. "It's vital that teens and adults are current on their immunizations because they're often the ones who give whooping cough to babies."

Historian Justo Sierra has written in his Political Evolution of the Mexican People, that had Mexico not defeated the French in Puebla on May 5, 1862, France would have gone to the aid of the South in the U.S. Civil War and the United States' destiny could have been very different.

France to our southern border and a separate country in the U.S. South.  Something to ponder.
