King County Council Event to Discuss Disproportionality

Sorry for the late notice; I received this event notice from School Board candidate, Leslie Harris (who keeps up as much or more than I do).

Members of the Metropolitan King County Council will be joined by their counterparts on the Seattle City Council for a special discussion that will focus on the challenges of meeting the educational needs of youth of color as a step to help reduce their numbers in the regional criminal justice system:

Wednesday, July 29
New Holly Gathering Hall
7054 32nd Ave South, Seattle
Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Meeting starts at 6:00 p.m.

King County Councilmember Larry Gossett and Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brien will co-host the special forum with:
• County Councilmembers Joe McDermott and Rod Dembowski,
• City Councilmembers Nick Licata and Kashama Sawant

This forum is an opportunity for the public to hear from and discuss with their elected officials as well as members of the Seattle School Board on the challenges and efforts to reduce those rates. That includes efforts by both the county and city to reduce disproportionality in both schools and the justice system

What is a bit odd is that they mention Seattle School Board directors but don't name anyone who is attending.

I've been watching Leslie Harris and I am becoming increasingly impressed with this woman's energy level.

Will the mysterious African American Males advisory committee be there? Who are they and why aren't we all apprised of their work? I think a group like this can be effective. But I want to know the appointed members aren't a bunch of Murray's shills.
I believe Michael Tolley is part of the group. I've seen this in e-mails.

It is my sincere hope that they include some public school teachers on the panel, as this is the group that is on the front line every single day attempting to educate and manage behavior at the same time.

Ummm... Seattle School Board members are elected officials. Perhaps this should have said "elected officials including members of the Seattle School Board"

That's from the meeting announcement. Do the city and/or county have efforts underway to reduce disproportionality in SPS? Are they working with SPS on it?

Charlie, I had to find out why the announcement was worded that way and I was told that yes, they know SB members are elected. It was a bit odd because the KC media guy did not seem too worried about it.

I tell you something is up that School Board members are really being treated as lesser elected officials.

To note, my new info is that the keynote speaker will be Wayne Au, ed professor at UW Bothell and noted expert on this topic.

What does this mean? Do we manage behavior or provide instruction (uh, I think that's a disabled student's legal right?) to address and modify behaviors that impede learning? Sounds like speducator does not understand special education.

I wish there were more places like this, because it was simply too amazing for words. I came here with my boyfriend the other night, and it was absolutely fabulous. The use of wood throughout Chicago event space adds a very warm and inviting feel to venue.
