Say No to Facebook Messenger for Kids

From the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood via the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy:

Please lend your support by signing the petition!

Research shows that adolescent social media use is linked to depression, poor sleep, and unhealthy body image – and now Facebook is targeting even younger kids.

Facebook’s Messenger Kids is the first major social media platform designed for young children. It features stickers, emojis, and animations to keep kids coming back to the app again and again. Younger children aren’t equipped to deal with the interpersonal challenges and addictive power of social media. And moving friendships online displaces the face-to-face interactions crucial for developing empathy and healthy relationships.

Help us protect childhood by telling Mark Zuckerberg: No Facebook for five-year-olds!

To which I would add; would he allow his own children to use it?

Thank you for highlighting the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. I've followed and supported their work for almost a decade. Great organization. Great ideas.

How about "Say No to Facebook for Adults" ?

Here's an in-depth look at some very serious and dangerous consequences of using Facebook that are finally being widely circulated, thanks to an early investor in and advisor to Facebook. Bad enough that both children and adults should consider saying No.

How To Fix Facebook Before It Fixes Us

It's long and meaty, so for those who have short attention spans, here's a far less satisfying, but very brief summary article (with links to more info):

Skip the summary article above, this one is much better. Seriously, everyone should read this excellent summary written by the same early Facebook investor:

How Facebook and Google Threaten Public Health - And Democracy

Facebook data was used for racial targeting too.

The ACLU of Northern California research found this: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter Provided Data Access for a Surveillance Product Marketed to Target Activists of Color

But remember, Instagram is owned by Facebook, so that's really Facebook, Facebook and Twitter. They only address problems like this when the public finds out about them, and even then, only to the minimum possible degree. Until no one is looking again.

Thank you. It is reminding me of continuing efforts regarding entertainment for children. This issue was one that Brita Butler Wall championed. She was alert to product placement and advertising in the schools. I suppose it will be never-ending.

Parents can block these applications using the firewall on your wifi router and cell phone parental controls.
