Seattle Schools News

Via Facebook:

I have a high school student that wants to start a Seattle coed wheelchair lacrosse team. She needs 8 players to start a team. In efforts to try to recruit I said I would also reach out to this network. Here are the coaches emails if you know of any high school students that would like to play wheelchair lacrosse.

Thanks

SPS is really gearing up to fight the flu.  Here's a schedule of dates for vaccinations.

This year we are rolling out our biggest effort to prevent illness. School nurses have partnered with the Visiting Nurse Association to come to approximately 50 schools in November and early December to vaccinate both students and staff. Students can get the vaccination regardless of insurance.
School-based health centers located in 25 of our schools also offer free flu shots to those students who are enrolled in the health center. Two Visiting Nurse Association clinics at the JSCEE are provided for staff to receive the vaccination.

Flu shots protect our most vulnerable students from getting ill and can help keep our students and staff healthy and in school. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the single best way to protect yourself and your family from influenza is to receive a flu shot each year. The CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older be vaccinated against the flu.

Parents may still register their child for a flu vaccination by sending a completed consent form to school or by being present at school on the day of the clinic to sign the form in person.
Anybody a parent at Jane Addams, Whitman or Madison whose child has taken a personal survey at school? I'd be interested to hear what you were told (if anything) before your child took it or if your child told you anything afterwards.  It might have been called, "Check Yourself."

We received notification about a week before the survey. The notification was friendly and clear and basically said the survey would be anonymous and that info from students wouldn't be tracked to them. The survey would ask personal questions about sex, drug use in order to help the state(?) determine how to target their instruction to students about how to avoid substance abuse, etc.
Middleschool Mom, could you send me the notification (sss.westbrook@gmail.com). I have learned that this survey asks some fairly personal questions about both the student and his/her parents/guardians. And that there is some data sharing involved.

The issue is whether SPS is getting the same survey as other districts.

Was it the Healthy Youth Survey? If so, it's done every 2 years, statewide, and provides a lot of important information re: youth behaviors and risks. It's anonymous, to encourage youth to be honest. It does ask personal information--that's the point.

Yes, there are also opportunities for data sharing--for example, researchers can request data sets for more in-depth analyses--but because it's all done anonymously it shouldn't be a problem. Schools can use the data to see how their students compare to students statewide. State officials can use the info address emerging trends, monitor progress in addressing known risks, etc. The survey is useful.

That said, schools should be informing parents. The SPS website suggests all schools with kids in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 participate, and it says parents are notified. However, it sounds like the notification process might need to be a little more extensive than what SPS does (or theoretically does). From the OSPI section on the Healthy Youth Survey, these are the 2018 requirements:

- Administer the survey during the allocated administration time, which is October 8-19th.
- Send out an informational survey brochure to parents provided in the materials sent to schools prior to the survey administration.
- Post information about the survey on the school website.
- Inform students of the survey.

HF
- Place a copy of the survey in the school office for parent review.

@Melissa,

I feel like we were informed twice about the survey in advance, but I no longer have the notifications. They were clear that the questions being asked would potentially be potentially uncomfortable (substance use, sex, etc.) but were also clear that it would be anonymized. Sorry I don't have the notification(s) still. If I find it I'll share.
