@ Melissa - I must share these articles so people can understand better the history of Columbus day and its meaning to the mediteranean people who emmigrated to the US and faced severe discrimination in the US. I think it is largely misunderstood. The NY times article did not touch upon this information. I have attached other NY times, NPR & other articles below.

Personally as a descendant of Sicilian American immigrants, I think S. Italian & Sicilian Americans deserve better than Columbus. He is not even someone who they have much in common even genetically or historically. Especially since the descendants of immigrants in the US are largely southern Italians & Sicilians, who are actually mixed heritage people due to various colonizers through the centuries. Italy is a new country and was only 60 or so years old when my Sicilian ancestors arrived in the US in 1919. As darker skinned people mixed with middle Eastern, Spanish, Greek, Arabic they even faced/face discrimination by northern Italians (different both culturally & genetically) since Italy unified in 1860.

Italian & Sicilian Americans were given a holiday by Roosevelt, after they faced extreme discrimination in the US (including a mass lynching) to help facilitate white N European American acceptance of them as "American". Some people do not know this history.

Some people are truly unaware "out west" because this history has not been shared and there is not as sizable "Italian" and/or Sicilian-American population as back East.

More good links to foster broader cultural understanding and cultural significance. As I mentioned I fall on the side of creating a day to honor someone who more accurately represents our ancestors struggle to be accepted as American.
