Seattle Schools Releases 2014-2015 Budget

Haven't read thru this myself but here's the SPS budget for next year.

From SPS:

Seattle Public Schools on June 11 released the proposed budget for the next school year, which includes funding for educating more than 52,000 students and operating 97 schools.

The proposed $689 million General Fund budget and $214 million Capital Fund budget will go to the School Board for introduction on June 18 and a July 2 vote.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 4 p.m. on June 25 in the auditorium at John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence, 2445 3rd Ave. S. Those wishing to speak about the FY 2014-15 Recommended Budgets must register at the School Board Office before or on the day of the public hearing.

The budget office will continue updating the budget appendices. Please check the budget department websitefor updated information.

The district has $689M in it's annual budget, and they complain about $1m to supply 28,000 students with math materils.

Budgets contain references to "Program 21" which I believe is Special Education. But there are no details. It's not clear where that is being allocated. Can somebody explain this?

Something seems wonky about the Pinehurst K-8 budget. What SpEd program/services are being included and why? Is it just an error? The way I read it, 141 students with 142 of them being FRL & SpEd.

I just glanced thru it and I find that the way the document is laid out makes it hard to understand.

Is this a standard budget document? I find the groupings weird.

I also need to look to see where they define JSCEE "administration. Because they have it at 5.4% and with the hiring they have been doing, I find that figure very hard to believe unless they are not counting certain employees as administration.

On page 40 they show the overall increase in FTEs and "admin" is split into 3 chunks, Unit, Central and Other - guessing that's one way to make "Central" look less? there's an additional 31 or so new FTEs under those 3 categories.

Plus the charts on page 41 would indicate about 20 new FTEs in
"other district administrator" and "Director/Supervisor" categories - which I imagine to not be cheap FTEs?

A student can be counted as both FRL and Special Ed. So - it's possible (but not likely) that of Pinehurst's 141 students, 52 are Special Ed and FRL and another 43 are FRL only, leaving 46 who are neither.

lynn, thanks for your response. I really didn't word my question clearly. I do know students can be both Sped and FRL. What caught my eye was the $13,574 WSS. It's the highest I could see, by far. It appeared that the bulk of that came from SpEd, so that's why I mentioned it.

I feel pretty strongly that that 5.4% number is fudged, and that "teaching" 63% includes a number of district supervisors, perhaps anyone who can nominally be associated with a few schools, even if they never directly interact with a student.

I also notice in almost all the supervisory break out pages(60's-70's), the FTE is going up.

with a rise in enrollment, one would expect total enrollment to go up.

That said, I also have real doubts about the under 6% figure for central administration.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is that under 6% calculated? According to the school FTE total on page 45 there are 5913 FTEs out of school budgets and, adding up the Central's listed FTE's I get 646.6 - - that looks closer to 11% but I admit to truly not knowing how it works.

Reader 47, you got farther than I did so thanks for the input. Yes, I suspect they are divvying up these people so that "Central" doesn't look so big.

I wish I had time to go thru this thing with a microscope but don't.

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

Update 2: an absolutely fabulous interactive map made by parent Beth Day (@thebethocracy on Twitter - she covers Board meetings and is fun to read).   end of update    Update 1: Mea culpa, I did indeed get Decatur and Thornton Creek mixed up. Thanks to all for the correction. end of update   I suspect some who read this post will be irate. Why do this? Because the district seems very hellbent on this effort with no oversight skid marks from the Board.    To clearly state - I do not believe that closing 20 schools is a good idea. I think they hit on 20 because they thought it might bring in the most savings. But the jury is still out on the savings because the district has not shown its work nor its data. Seattle School Board Meeting, Wednesday, September 18,2024

Please let us know if you attend the rally before the meeting.  Seeing photos from Twitter; looks like a good crowd at the rally. The West Seattle Blog is there reporting.  I am going to attempt to live blog so you will see abbreviations, spelling/grammar errors, etc. I will clean it up but I think it is worth trying to do. I will be refreshing the page as I go.  I am sad to see that apparently President Liza Rankin is not even going to allow 10 people over the regular 20 to testify. Just five.  Also, right at the beginning, the Board has stuck in, after Board comments, a Progress Monitoring presentation. They could have put it at the end but they didn't. They think - in 45 minutes - they can do Superintendent comments, Board comments and this presentation. I doubt that public testimony will start on-time. Tone-deaf doesn't even cover it with Board leadership. To note, apparently the district scheduled the NE community meeting on closures on Rosh Hashanah which is October 2. I
