Seattle Schools 2025 - Here We Go

 I had JUST sat down to start out the New Year at this blog and saw a comment from a reader about President Gina Topp who appears to be applying for ANOTHER gig in the legislature. 

But to start, I'm hoping we all have a safe and secure 2025. I'm not sure we can ask for more at this point, given the political situation. 

However, you are likely here because you have children or grandchildren so my thought is....enjoy them. Find joy and happy times with your children while supporting their education.


I see the district is rolling out "levy informational meetings," starting next week in advance of the levy election on February 11th. The first one is this Thursday.

These in-person meetings offer a chance to ask questions, hear details, and learn how the levies fund our schools. Interpretation services will be available at all meetings.  

Levy informational meetings (all meetings are 6:30-7:30 p.m.):

  • Thursday, Jan. 9: Genesee Hill Elementary, 5013 SW Dakota St., Seattle
  • Monday, Jan. 13: Wing Luke Elementary School, 3701 S Kenyon St, Seattle
  • Tuesday, Jan. 14: Viewlands Elementary School, 10525 3rd Ave NW, Seattle
  • Thursday, Jan. 16: Kimball Elementary School, 3200 23rd Ave S, Seattle
  • Tuesday, Jan. 21: Olympic Hills Elementary School, 13018 20th Ave. NE


 

Meanwhile, the School Board is having their own meetings. 

One is their 6-hour Board retreat on Saturday, January 11th. No agenda yet available.

Two other meetings are on the calendar, both on Wednesday, January 15th for "Community Engagement - Goals and Guardrails" at South Shore K-8 AND at Lincoln High School. Both meetings start at 5:30 pm. I'll bet that's a super convenient time for most parents.

Community engagement with Board Directors to review the proposed Goals and Guardrails for the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. One event will be at Lincoln High School and one will be at South Shore K-8. These events are not official board meetings, but are open to the public and all who wish to attend. 

The Board's first board meeting of the year is on Wednesday, January 22nd. No agenda yet available. 

Just two public meetings? I'd be willing to bet their are having meetings with special groups and those meetings will not be open to all.

I'll be voting NO on both levies. If the board can't bother having a financial and operational committee, I can't support higher levies. And, I fully expect the legislature to raise the levy lid.

I noticed 2025 is kicking off with another school worker charged with rape of a precious 7th grader at Aki Kurose. Since the schools are not doing it, parents should take a close look at who is meeting with our kids during school hours and what topics are they talking about. Aki Kurose runs the program that asks kids to type into an assessment test their ‘sexual attractions’ and then conducts 1-on-1 intervention sessions about their answers and scores. Several kids typed into their records they didnt like taking the test and felt uncomfortable.

Tuesday Open Thread

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). There are only three of us speaking about the Green Dot resolution asking the City to not grant the zoning departures that Green Dot has requested.  It's me, long-time watchdog, Chris Jackins, and the head of the Washington State Charter Schools Association, Patrick D'Amelio.  (I knew Mr. D'Amelio when he headed the Alliance for Education and Big Brothers and Big Sisters; he's a stand-up guy.)

Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

Update 2: an absolutely fabulous interactive map made by parent Beth Day (@thebethocracy on Twitter - she covers Board meetings and is fun to read).   end of update    Update 1: Mea culpa, I did indeed get Decatur and Thornton Creek mixed up. Thanks to all for the correction. end of update   I suspect some who read this post will be irate. Why do this? Because the district seems very hellbent on this effort with no oversight skid marks from the Board.    To clearly state - I do not believe that closing 20 schools is a good idea. I think they hit on 20 because they thought it might bring in the most savings. But the jury is still out on the savings because the district has not shown its work nor its data. I suspect closing schools and THEN leasing/renting them is the big plan but that means the district really has to keep the buildings up.   But this district, with its happy talk about "well-resourced schools" is NOT acknowledging the pain and yes, gr...

Education News Roundup

From the ever-amusing Washington Policy Center : Vouchers are Pell Grants for students under 18.  Vouchers are no different than Pell Grants or GI benefits, except the money goes to the families of students younger than age 18.  Except they are. Pell Grants were created to help needy students and that's not really the goal of the voucher program.  The Pell grant website does have a couple of great studies on why low-income students drop out before finishing their higher ed and what makes a difference.
