Seattle Schools Announces Community Meetings

Editor update: Interesting how the district announced these meetings on Thursday - and they will be held starting in two weeks - and yet they are not on the district's calendar. Wouldn't you think that one of the tasks for any district would be keeping the calendar updated so parents know what is happening? 

Maybe it might be okay - but they should ask Mr. Crabill - if a Board director, anyone, might give Jones' staff a nudge to keep the calendar updated.

You are invited to join Seattle Public Schools (SPS) for an upcoming community meeting. During these meetings, senior leaders will connect with our community to envision what a well-resourced school looks like. SPS staff will share a presentation, respond to questions, and facilitate group discussion.

Your feedback will help guide future district planning. This fall, we will review your feedback and develop an inclusive and equitable plan.

SPS has the opportunity to reimagine a system of well-resourced schools that is safe and equitable. Our goal is to offer students the support, the programs and resources, and the inspiration they need to succeed in the neighborhoods where they live.

Community Meetings

We are hosting five regional in-person meetings and one online meeting.

Central Region: John Stanford Center auditorium, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 6 p.m.

Location: 2445 3rd Ave. S Seattle, 98134

Southwest Region: Madison Middle School commons/lunchroom, Thursday, Aug. 10, 6 p.m.

Location: 3429 45th Ave. SW Seattle, 98116

Southeast Region: South Shore PreK-8 rotunda/lunchroom, Monday, Aug. 14, 6 p.m.

Location: 4800 S Henderson St. Seattle, 98118

Northeast Region: Nathan Hale High School commons/lunchroom, Tuesday, Aug. 15, 6 p.m.

Location: 10750 30th Ave. NE Seattle, 98125

Northwest Region: Robert Eagle Staff Middle School commons, Thursday, Aug. 17, 6 p.m.

Location: 1330 N 90th St. Seattle, 98103

Online: Teams Meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 29, 5:30 p.m.

Translation and interpretation services will be provided at each meeting based on request. American Sign Language (ASL), Amharic, Cantonese, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese interpreters will be available. After the online meeting, a recording will be posted to the district website.

To be clear, that RSVP is ONLY if you need accommodations or if you want to submit a question. You do not have to RSVP to attend any meeting. When the link to the online meeting is available, I'll link that. 

So that's six meetings for seven regions. 

Naturally, SPS is doing its normal pattern of stacking these meetings nearly back-to-back in the dead of summer. You wouldn't want to spread them out over, say, three weeks.  

I have a question; why one at the John Stanford Center?  The Central Area has schools. I'm not sure as many parents would feel as comfortable at the JSCEE than in a school.

Little Bird, I did look at the calendar; these dates were not there.

My point is that if the district announces dates for events then those dates should be on the calendar immediately after the announcement.

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). There are only three of us speaking about the Green Dot resolution asking the City to not grant the zoning departures that Green Dot has requested.  It's me, long-time watchdog, Chris Jackins, and the head of the Washington State Charter Schools Association, Patrick D'Amelio.  (I knew Mr. D'Amelio when he headed the Alliance for Education and Big Brothers and Big Sisters; he's a stand-up guy.)

Who Is A. J. Crabill (and why should you care)?

Why You Should Care Mr. Crabill has found quite the acolyte in Director Chandra Hampson. In the course of discussions over SOFG, she says his name over and over, "A.J .says we...." Now that's not too surprising given the direction the district is heading and that it is Mr. Crabill's work with the Council of Great City Schools is how we got here. But it appears that Mr. Crabill is working very closely with Hampson and we know she wields some amount of power over the majority of the Board. Mr. Crabill is going to continue to work with the Board as SOFG is instituted in SPS. In fact, his role may become more public as it did at one SPS Board meeting in the spring where he was on the phone during the meeting and suggested the Board stop the meeting to "self-reflect." I also noticed that in a district in South Carolina, when things weren't going to plan, he blamed the Board for not following SOFG to the letter. Look for that to happen here if Board members w

Upcoming Seattle School Board Candidate Forum

Via the SPS webpage: The public is invited to attend or stream this forum for candidates for appointment to the District 2 and 4 School Board Director seats. All finalists will have the opportunity to share why they are interested in serving on the Seattle School Board and answer questions selected by the Board and Student Members.
