Podesta to be Named Interim Superintendent Until September

I was just checking in tonight to the Seattle Schools website and found this:

School Board Special MeetingJune 18, 2025 from 4:30-5:00 pm.
Board Special Meeting: Action Items – Regular Board
Meeting Date Change; Appointing Acting Superintendent.

All Board members will attend and vote remotely for this meeting.

The meeting will be live streamed on SPSTV and broadcast on television on Comcast 26
(standard-def) and 319 (hi-def), Wave 26 (standard-def) and 695 (hi-def), and Century
Link 8008 (standard-def) and 8508 (hi-def). To listen by phone, dial 206-800-4125 and
use Conference ID: 929 966 899#.

Action Items (Introduction & Action)

1. Amendment to 2024-25 Regular Board Meeting Calendar

Approval of this item would amend the 2024-25 Regular Board Meeting schedule to reschedule the meeting previously scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025 to Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Immediate action is in the best interest of the district.

2. Designation of Acting Superintendent to perform the duties of the Superintendent through
September 3, 2025

Approval of this item would designate Fred Podesta to serve as Acting Superintendent of the District through September 3, 2025, and authorize Fred Podesta, as Acting Superintendent, to carry out those powers and duties as prescribed by law and policy for the District Superintendent. Immediate action is in the best interest of the District.

I'm not sure why they are changing the July Board meeting date; this BAR is a bit cryptic.

So Brent Jones is just ....gone.

Fred Podesta is a fairly savvy, smart guy and probably the best choice at JSCEE for interim superintendent. And, since the Board spells out how long he will be - through September 3, 2025 - I doubt they would be foolish enough to try to install anyone else this summer.

I feel like Fred has been doing the heavy lifting all along and often seems to be thrust into Board meetings in place of the actual…person paid to be the subject matter expert. He was certainly a competent administrator at the City of Seattle.

Good Move
