Panel Discussion Tonight on Seattle Schools

So sorry for the late notice - this event fell off my radar.

At 5:30 pm at Folio in Pike Place Market Sandeep Kaushik will be moderating a Block Table panel on the litany of problems and controversies the Seattle school district is currently experiencing.

The stellar expert panel includes three former Seattle school board members: Dr. Stephan Blanford, Vivian Song, and Michael DeBell

The Folio is at 93 Pike Street.

Thank you so much for the link Benjamin. It's a fascinating conversation and touches on some topics that Seattle Times, Seattle Hall Pass, KUOW, etc mostly refuse to discuss in depth like the apparent third-rail of SPS politics - the teachers' contract.

I thought it was fascinating that it appears that Blanford believes that Garfield still has a lot of National Merit Scholars when in fact it had ONE in the last announcement and Lakeside had more than the entirety of SPS combined. Guess he missed that memo.

However, this comment from him is a dead-on doozy: "but the problem was that we as a city elect single-issue candidates based on vetting based on the Stranger, which doesn't do a good job of vetting candidates."

To a large degree a significant segment of the populace here will vote for The Stranger's slate unless the problem is so obvious it can't be ignored. Which is how I believe the city ended up with Ann Davison as city attorney along with a more centrist city council but at the same time someone like Briggs gets elected over Gitenstein. Demographics being what they are, most voters in this city don't have kids and thus haven't experienced the slow-motion trainwreck personally.
