StopClosures Action Today

I received the following notice from the StopClosures group:

***********************************************
Student, Parents, Families, Teachers and Community Members,

Thank you for contacting StopClosures with your support of our efforts to halt Phase 1, and revoke Phase 2, under the leadership of Eric Dawson and Sakara Remmu. StopClosures is working to save every school slated for closure. We represent the overwhelming number of families in the District and throughout the Seattle Community who are opposed to the current [or any] closure plan.

We understand that if the District continues to refuse to work in collaboration with the community, as parents, students, advocates, and voters, we have the power and the right to halt any future business of the district, including the upcoming levies, and the recall of those Directors who have voted for closures. We will continue with these efforts.

Our goal, and our hope is that the District understand the severity of its actions and the irreversible damage that will be done to communities and children should buildings close, and will work to ultimately find a solution that does not include throwing students and communities out of school buildings.

The next School Board Meeting is Wednesday, November 1st, 6:00pm at the John Stanford Center. StopClosures will again address the Board and Community on behalf of every school slated for closure.

WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE. WE NEED TO FILL UP THE HALLS AND DEMAND PHASE 1 BE REVOKED.

StopClosures is also working in a supportive role for the United Student Body of Rainier Beach, as they fight to keep a private organization from displacing them from their building in order to open a private, pilot, charter school. Students will be on hand to testify and need you there to support their efforts as well.

A statement will be offered by at least 1 Director of the Board- be there to hear it with your own ears, and to see the progress [we hope, at any rate] that the sacrifice and struggle has brought us!

THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER UNTIL EVERY BUILDING IS SAVED!!!

SECURITY MEASURES- The Seattle School District Security Department [as it has been relayed to us] will be at the meeting and this time will be wearing identifiable clothing, and will patrol the parking lots, before, during and after the meeting. They will also be stationed at all major entrances throughout the evening. This is to ensure that everyone who attends the meeting will be safe.

If you have any questions about the information contained in this email, the upcoming levies, Rainier Beach HS, Phase 1 or Phase 2, or the recall effort, please respond to this email and it will be forwarded to either Eric Dawson or Sakara Remmu.

Keep Fighting,
StopClosures

Someone please explain to me why the District should not close M L King Elementary school. Does the District have an obligation to hold open every school it has ever built regardless of all reason?

Why doesn't StopClosures rally to re-open Allen, Sand Point, Cedar Park, and McDonald? Those schools were also closed.
