Cedar Park Elementary Tour Tonight

Didn't see this on the SPS calendar before so sorry for the late notice.

6-7:30 pm
Cedar Park Elementary 13224 37th Ave. NE

Visit our (maybe your) school set to open in the fall for next school year.  We'll show you around and give you an idea of the what it would be like for your son or daughter to come here.

Cedar Park is what's called an "option school." This means anyone in the Seattle School district is eligible to attend. Submit a "school choice" form (available on Feb. 6) during the open enrollment period that runs Feb. 13 - 24.

Sure would be helpful to know the theme of Cedar Park. Aren't option schools supposed to have one?

Expeditionary learning! Like Thornton Creek down the road.

Is that what it really is? If so, good. Thornton Creek is a great program and I think usually full?

It is usually full, with a huge waitlist. I think they have some room right now since they moved into a building twice the size of their old one. But not in the younger grades. It is very popular. I hope Cedar Park sees the same success.

It seems somewhat unlikely this site will open based on the staff discussion. Cedar Park appears to be among the first items slated to be cutback if the levy cliff occurs. Unfortunately, that does not align well with the open enrollment process.

My guess is that they are putting it in the open enrollment pool with the thought that it probably won't get enough interest to justify opening. Then they can cut it from the budget and demonstrate savings even though they never really intended to open it in the beginning....
