Director Community Meetings

 A reader asked:

Director Song Maritz will be holding a community meeting. Have other directors be holding meetings?

From the Board calendar:

Join School Board Director Song Maritz for a community meeting on Monday, December 13, 7 – 8 p.m.

Meeting held online with Zoom. Event registration required.

You know, I had been wondering this myself. Month after month with no meetings. Each director goes her or his or their way so I have no idea when the other directors might have their own.

Director Hampson said, early on in her term, that she didn't really need to talk to parents in her own region but should be devoting most of her time to other areas.

I'll just note that every region has always had one director so any parent who didn't feel heard, well, that's on their director.

I'll also point out that directors are elected to represent the ENTIRE city so if a director openly says she's not going to have time for some parents, well, I hope that region remembers that should that director attempt to run again.

Going to the Board calendar I see another director, Lisa Rivera Smith, is having a community meeting tomorrow, December 11th.

Join School Board Director Rivera Smith for a community meeting on Saturday, December 11, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Meeting held online with Zoom. Event registration required.

These meetings are chances to share your questions and concerns, and to build community among other SPS parents and caregivers. While open to everyone, District 2 school families are encouraged to attend.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Please note, registration requests are manually approved, so please register *no later than* 5:45pm day of the meeting.

I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

Also, a quick note to the Board office - on the Board meetings page, there is a photo of the last Board. Maybe put the new one in.

Chandra Hampson is my district director and has made it abundantly clear she does not want to hear from constituents. Social media pleas to stop emailing, then shutting down her neighborhood walks, then deleting her FB account altogether. She has not once returned an email of mine. She sure likes to talk and sound smart at the dais though! So grateful to directors who hold forums and invite all city residents. Director Rivera Smith has also allowed for other directors to attend as well (Harris has done this) and I love the collaboration there. Thanks for posting links to these events.

Director Hampson meets with families of color regularly. Last meeting was in partnership with King County Public Health about the vaccine resolution.
President Hersey meets with district 7 families every week. I believe these last two weeks people have taken a break.
West Seattle has not seen the likes of your friend Director Harris in a long long time.

Hmmm

Where does Hampson hold these secret, limited invite meetings? Why can’t District 3 parents attend? When did “inclusive” come to mean only certain types of families. Oh well, she always said she never has any power anyway, so who wants to meet with someone who won’t own their role. At least she has been exposed for who she is.

So Hmm, if Hampson meets with some parents and does make the meeting open to all, I have a problem with that (as a general community meeting). Ditto for Hersey. They are directors for ALL the district, not just their region.

I get a weekly notification of all Board activities and I have not seen a meeting on the calendar for a long time.

You are mistaken; Director Harris and I are not friends. You should ask her about having meetings, not me.
