The Kids Are STILL Not Alright

This happened just a few days ago in Mill Creek SD (bold mine):

As I write to you tonight, after a very long day of working with the amazing Mill Creek Staff, Kent Police Department, KSD Safety Services, KSD Leadership, and the FBI (yes, the FBI), we have come to a resolution to the school shooting threat that was posted yesterday. Kent Police have made contact tonight with a Mill Creek student that has admitted to falsely creating the Instagram post to get out of going to school.

The Threat Level Assessment Index is now at ZERO! Zero means that the threat is now 100% non-existent. I hope that this information will be considered in your decision to keep or send your student(s) to school tomorrow, December 15th. We hope to see everyone.

Moreover, I hope that you will talk to your student(s) about the impact that this has had on the Mill Creek school community. From an administrative perspective, it has depleted all energies that my team and I have had over the last 36 hours. The public outpouring and responses have been incredible. Thank you to those that have reached out with concerns and/or suggestions- you are appreciated!

Again, any threat of this nature is taken very seriously and there is no rest until resolved. Special thanks to all our partners (listed above) in this experience that have helped us regain a sense of normalcy heading into this Winter break.

The world today is as challenging as it has ever been, and a small negative act like this one can have a powerful effect. However, so can a positive one. Please talk to your student(s) about the impact and how they can make a difference each day by helping our community be BETTER in a positive way!

I saw this on a Facebook page and I am so impressed by the calm and encouraging words from senior leadership in Mill Creek SD.

PLEASE, talk to your child. There can't be any "but I didn't hurt anyone" statement because yes, this student did cause concern for thousands of people. The time, the worry, the resources that the district had to spend for someone's Ferris Bueller day is probably quite high. Not to mention that other students may be on high alert after the Oxford shooting. I saw one comment from a parent that their child still didn't want to go back.

I do not the status of the student but my opinion is zero tolerance and the student should be expelled. In normal times, I might feel differently but this copy cat stuff needs to stop.
