School Board Preview and District Announces Community Meetings

 Just to say, I came in late to the Audit Committee and holy smokes! There are a lot of serious and concerned faces! And much hemming and hawing from the Superintendent. I'm still listening in so more to come.

 

There are 141 people signed up for the Speaker List for the Board meeting. Naturally, most people are signed up to speak on closures. It appears that the list was only expanded 5 more so just 25 speakers. I think they should do 40.

Interesting that two speakers on West Seattle High made the list but I see others on the waitlist. Overcrowded and under resourced?


Also, the district announced the series of community meetings on school closures:

Dear SPS families and staff,

You're invited to a community meeting to discuss Seattle Public Schools' plans to reimagine a system of well-resourced, safe, and equitable schools.

In these meetings, SPS leaders will share information on how our district is working to provide every student with the support they need at a school close to home.

SPS will ensure special education services and pathways for qualifying students. Highly capable, advanced learning, and multilingual services will be available at all elementary schools, and the Dual Language program will expand to serve more students in their communities.

Community Meetings

We are hosting five regional in-person meetings and one online meeting.

  • Online: Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m., Zoom Meeting (Families and staff will soon receive the Zoom meeting link, and the link will be posted on our website.)
  • Southwest Region: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m. Genesee Hill Elementary, 5013 SW Dakota St., Seattle, WA 98116
  • Southeast Region: Thursday, Sept. 26, 6:30 p.m. Wing Luke Elementary, 3701 S Kenyon St., Seattle, WA 98118
  • Central Region: Tuesday, Oct. 1, 6:30 p.m. Kimball Elementary, 3200 23rd Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98144
  • Northeast Region: Thursday, Oct. 3, 6:30 p.m. Olympic Hills Elementary, 13018 20th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98125
  • Northwest Region: Monday, Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m. James Baldwin Elementary, 11725 1st Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98125

Translation and interpretation services will be provided at each meeting. American Sign Language (ASL), Amharic, Cantonese, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese interpreters will be available. After the online meeting, a recording will be posted to the district website.

Wow - that speaker list!! SCPTSA didn’t sign up fast enough to get any airtime, hoping some light bulbs are going on for people that this group is the equivalent of HR - mouthpiece of leadership, not your friend.

And shame on Rankin & Friends for slashing public comment in half by reducing the number of regularly scheduled meetings, this year of all years. Girl on the wrong side of history.

I see not one but TWO SCPTSA board members on the list of testifiers. The nerve!
Oh wait your point was they did not sign up fast enough.

Tuesday Open Thread

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). There are only three of us speaking about the Green Dot resolution asking the City to not grant the zoning departures that Green Dot has requested.  It's me, long-time watchdog, Chris Jackins, and the head of the Washington State Charter Schools Association, Patrick D'Amelio.  (I knew Mr. D'Amelio when he headed the Alliance for Education and Big Brothers and Big Sisters; he's a stand-up guy.)

Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

Update 2: an absolutely fabulous interactive map made by parent Beth Day (@thebethocracy on Twitter - she covers Board meetings and is fun to read).   end of update    Update 1: Mea culpa, I did indeed get Decatur and Thornton Creek mixed up. Thanks to all for the correction. end of update   I suspect some who read this post will be irate. Why do this? Because the district seems very hellbent on this effort with no oversight skid marks from the Board.    To clearly state - I do not believe that closing 20 schools is a good idea. I think they hit on 20 because they thought it might bring in the most savings. But the jury is still out on the savings because the district has not shown its work nor its data. I suspect closing schools and THEN leasing/renting them is the big plan but that means the district really has to keep the buildings up.   But this district, with its happy talk about "well-resourced schools" is NOT acknowledging the pain and yes, grief, that is to come fro

Who Is A. J. Crabill (and why should you care)?

Why You Should Care Mr. Crabill has found quite the acolyte in Director Chandra Hampson. In the course of discussions over SOFG, she says his name over and over, "A.J .says we...." Now that's not too surprising given the direction the district is heading and that it is Mr. Crabill's work with the Council of Great City Schools is how we got here. But it appears that Mr. Crabill is working very closely with Hampson and we know she wields some amount of power over the majority of the Board. Mr. Crabill is going to continue to work with the Board as SOFG is instituted in SPS. In fact, his role may become more public as it did at one SPS Board meeting in the spring where he was on the phone during the meeting and suggested the Board stop the meeting to "self-reflect." I also noticed that in a district in South Carolina, when things weren't going to plan, he blamed the Board for not following SOFG to the letter. Look for that to happen here if Board members w
