Odds and Ends

Wanted to get this word out if you can help (from our friends at the West Seattle Blog):

We just found out that two physicians friends will be headed to Haiti this weekend. They have been told that there is a great need for crutches due to amputations. If you have any crutches that you could donate please bring them by our house by Sunday night so we can get them on the flight. They can be left in the driveway or in the back of the pickup parked outside. The truck is a beige GMC with a topper. Our address is 3008 45th Ave SW. The house is blue and the cross streets are 45th and Stevens. If you have any questions please call Cathy at 206-406-6633.

And, RIP to two who counted in education - J.D. Salinger and Howard Zinn.

I tried to get in touch with the contact person but was unable to. On the off chance she reads this blog, check your messages! I need to know how many crutches you can handle!
I spoke with her Josh before I posted this and she said they didn't have much so I think as many as you can easily transport. Thanks!

Crutches are often available at Goodwill, Value Village, etc. I once bought my daughter a set to play with. They might consider asking around at such shops, as I don't think they sell very fast and the shops might just as soon donate them. (Or people could just buy them -- I don't remember the secondhand stores charging very much at all.)

“I'm worried that students will take their obedient place in society and look to become successful cogs in the wheel - let the wheel spin them around as it wants without taking a look at what they're doing. I'm concerned that students not become passive acceptors of the official doctrine that's handed down to them from the White House, the media, textbooks, teachers and preachers.”
--Howard Zinn

Many thanks to the readers of and contributors to this blog whose ongoing efforts help to ensure we are raising the next generation of thinkers. I think our collective efforts would make Mr. Zinn proud.

Yeah, thanks Melissa -- I talked with her today and she asked me NOT to put out the request to the Microsoft corp.net for fear that she might be buried in a crutchy avalanche. You ask all of Microsoft for something and you often wind up with a WHOLE LOT of something.

Still and all, a great idea. More power to her!

Remembering Howard Zinn.

Bill Moyers did a nice remembrance tonight.

Thanks Dora. I had two teens watching DVDs of Fullmetal Alchemist here last night, so missed Bill Moyers.
