Waitlist Date May Have Moved

Update:  the staff IS recommending that the waitlist dissolve on August 15th.  The change is in the BAR. Good job, parents.

end of update
A parent at the Board meeting is reporting that Ashley Davies, the Enrollment Director, is going to recommend an August 15th waitlist date, not May 31st.  Will let you know if this comes to pass.  If so, quite a win there for parent power.

Comments

It's still incredibly concerning that they clearly do not have a real plan for how they are going to implement this plan.
I don't think I used the word "plan" enough in that comment.
I think they have something of a plan but, in all fairness, we all decided this is a pilot so it may not be clear initially.

Of course, there is still no reason to believe that any work will be done on the waitlists between May 31 and August 15.

I think it would be far better for the District to say that the waitlists will be dissolved when a defined body of work is completed rather than saying that the waitlists will be dissolved when a certain date arrives. The work, not the timing, should dictate the end of the waitlists.

I think the big deal here is that while there is no guarantee that any waitlists will move by May 31, it's possible. If the changes they do this year to move waitlists by May 31 fall flat, they can't just go and say "oops, didn't make it, we just have to dissolve the waitlists because that's policy." If they don't make their goal, they still have a backstop. I do support an end date. If it's just "when the work is done," nothing will happen because the work is never 100% complete. Having a deadline focuses the mind.

FWIW, I think it's unlikely much will move over the summer. Holding the option has the potential to save a lot of trouble later, though.
Eric and Charlie, Ms. Davies and Dr. Herndon seemed to be saying that they wanted to get more work done - more people moved on the waitlist - by May 31st. It sounds a bit like the August 15th date is there for display but maybe might not be used so much (or effort made to move it after May 31st.)

I'm honestly not that worried about whether the real date is May 31 or August 15, as long as they move the waitlists reasonably effectively. What I don't want to happen is have a snafu in AL/language/staff workload cause waitlists not to move at all, before or after May 31. I think we were at a pretty good risk of that (we can't move the waitlist until testing is done, testing won't be done in time, I guess we won't move the waitlist at all). With August 15, there's a backstop.

This is definitely a step in the right direction. It still leaves the problem of September no-shows. When parents move or go private over the summer, they often don't bother to tell their expected school, and some will intentionally hold a seat until School actually starts. It will mean that the waitlists dissolve with seats in Option schools that are open a few weeks later. But there may be no way to avoid that.
Ragweed, they didn't say how but Dr. Herndon said staff was going to make a "diligent" effort to ask families earlier about their intentions and would follow-up on those who didn't give an answer the first time.

I noticed that BFDay is beginning tours soon, and the district is starting open enrollment Dec1st.
Hope this is connected enough to waitlists to retain, but I havent noticed other schools open house dates?
