Meeting on the Reopening of Lincoln High

Update:  I am told that the notice went to several community groups in Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard, etc as well as the alumni group for Lincoln High.  Again, this meeting is ONLY about building design - not programming or enrollment.  You can certainly go and ask questions but I doubt anyone from Enrollment or C&I will be there to answer those types of questions.

End of update

The district sent out this notice that only went to neighbors in a 2-block radius of Lincoln.  The district seems to thank this is good enough but given how many people this reopening will affect, two blocks is not much.

I also note that this is a Capital projects meeting so will they be discussing logistics for reopening this high school?  I'll ask but I would doubt it.

2 blocks?! Was that a typo? Thanks for posting, but shouldn't this notice have been given to all SPS families living in the high school zones to be redrawn?

-unbelievable
Again, this is about the work on the building. I don't think that is really clear in this message but I don't think anyone from Enrollment or any other department than Capital/Facilities will be that. (That said, invite your Board member to go.)

No, that was not a typo.

Did notices go to renters in the area? or just property owners? And I can't imagine a two block radius covers the actual impact area for the construction.

I got an e-mail and I live in Phinney Ridge, so I think it was more than just 2 blocks (which wouldn't really include many residents at all, when you consider 1 block away is 45th, with all of the businesses).
Thanks, Cynthia. I was told two blocks and, in the past, people complained about the small radius.

The general mailing was sent to people within a 2-block radius, but some people who were on individual contact lists for whatever reason were also included.

The 2 block radius is part of the minimum legal required notice for changes in the building status.

There are some pretty strict laws regarding public meetings and public notification, regarding changes in status to public assets. If the minimum is not met, entire projects are subject to legal challenge.

This protection is one of the items that gets muddy when a building is called a program. When SPS shut middle college as a program closure none of those protections were triggered.

Melissa,

Thanks for the public notice about this meeting. I also wanted to let folks know that I will be attending this meeting and welcome anybody interested in Lincoln to attend. The discussion is focused on the building design at this time, but raising early awareness and getting feedback about programmatic aspects of Lincoln reopening is a good thing.

Rick Burke
Director, Dist. II
