And Hamilton ... thanks!

Mc Clure is essentially all of QA and Magnolia (Lawton, Blaine, Coe, and John Hay are the reference feeder schools).

Whitman boundaries are SPS boundary to the north, Puget Sound to the west, Eastern boundary is a bit hard to describe...I5 down to 80th, then it heads west along 80th, angles west toward the top of green lake and straight west along 70th until 15th, then drops south to ship canal, southern boundary is ship canal. Feeder schools are Broadview Thompson, Northgate, Viewlands, North Beach, Loyal Heights, Whittier, Greenwood, Daniel Bagley, and Adams.

Hope that helps...

The maps are up on SPS website... look under SAP and choose maps.

Good luck!

I think Eckstein's reference area is larger than I expected. It encompasses Bryant right down to SandPoint Way in most areas. Laurelhurst goes to Hamilton.

Eckstein's attendance area is much bigger than I ever would have guessed. I think they really screwed up here. The guarantee of access to Eckstein is going to keep a lot of people in the District who would otherwise have left. The historical numbers are not going to be a continuing trend.

The Eckstein area's southern border is way down at 60th by Green Lake and drops under Ravenna Park to 55th. There are NINE elementary schools - some of them quite big - in the feeder pattern for Eckstein.

Whitman and Washington also have nine. Mercer, Aki Kurose, and Denny have six. Hamilton, in contrast, has only five feeder elementaries. Madison has four. McClure has only four also, but one of them is a K-8, so really only three.

I am loving the Eckstein boundaries! And, the rest of my neighborhood will be pleased as well. We have kids going to Whitman when Eckstein is much closer. I know this will definitely keep families in Pinehurst who had been thinking of moving to other neighborhoods in Seattle.
Maybe Hamilton only has five feeder elementaries because north end APP is also at Hamilton, which is 200 to 250 students.

Similarly, maybe Washington has 9 because half of Lowell doesn't go there, and Madrona is K8? Where do Lowell's special ed kids usually go for middle school?

Re: Eckstein - I think we already know there are far more kids in that area than will fit in Eckstein. My read is Jane Addams as a middle school, especially with new elementaries adjacent to the Bryant and View Ridge areas.

Hamilton has about 300 fewer seats than Eckstein, plus they house APP, so it makes perfect sense that they have fewer elementary schools feeding into the school.

Eckstein; The Eckstein boundary used to go in a concentric circle around the school. Many families from Greenlake, Greenwood, Wallingford, U district, Phinney, and north Laurelhurst all used to get in. All of those areas are now in the Hamilton and Whitman attendance areas, so that makes some space for the Eckstein boundary to move farther north.

However, I think Charlie is right. Previously families in the North part of the NE cluster were assigned to Hamilton. All those students will now be assigned to Eckstein. Further, many, and I do mean many, families went private or to Shoreline. They will ALL be coming back now that they can get into Eckstein. I'm not confident that staff figured that into the numbers.

I think we will see the portables currently at Hale moved to Eckstein (which already has many portables) for a year, maybe two, and then the Eckstein boundaries will have to shrink.

As far as how soon boundaries would have to be revised, there's this from the Times article just posted:

In drawing the lines proposed today, district staff members took into account how many students live nearby, safe walking routes, and a number of other factors. They also designed the plan so that no changes would be needed until 2015 at the earliest.

The SAP says the functional capacity of Eckstein is 1200+. Eckstein's boundaries are big because they expect or want it to be big. Or maybe the case has been created to repurpose Addams as a middle school?

There are great cheers in the north end tonight! Let's keep Eckstein as drafted!

Eckstein will be dramatically overfilled, at least until Jane Addams is converted to an attendance area comprehensive middle school.

I also wouldn't be surprised if at least one or two of the three southernmost elementaries in the Eckstein attendance area find themselves in the Hamilton attendance area before the boundaries are finalized.
Yes, there does appear to be quite a "counting on" of JA in order to make Eckstein work.

Renee, don't let them hear you in Laurelhurst. I'm sure they are not happy.
Roy Smith said…
Laurelhurst didn't completely lose. They could have wrapped the attendance area for Hale all the way down the shore of Lake Washington and include Laurelhurst in that area.

As it is, I don't see how Roosevelt will be anything other than severely overfull, particularly after a couple of years of families who are moving planning their moves to take advantage of guaranteed assignment.

Melissa, Laurelhurst south of 45th Ave NE was assigned to Hamilton this year, and the kids are very happy -- much to the surprise of us, their parents, who wanted Eckstein but now realize it was not a big deal.

And we'll be even happier to be at Hamilton if (when?) the parking lot at Eckstein is saturated with portables and we're in a brand new building with a manageable population.

I agree that the writing is on the wall regarding the switchover of Jane Addams to a comprehensive middle school. Either that, or Bryant is coming to Hamilton, too.
Bruce, I am glad to hear that. I think Hamilton has some really great things going for it and there's no reason that they can't both be great schools with great parent support.

hamilton is the new mini-eckstein.

I concur that eckstein area seems way, way too big. I was shocked!

if JA to be re-purposed, why not now? Superintendent saying 'demographic data does not support another comprehensive MS"...

what gives?

In reading Appendix C, www.seattleschools.org/area/newassign/NSAP_ProposedBoundaries_Appendix_C.pdf, I see that Jane Addams is expected to draw 450 grade 6-8 students from Eckstein, Hamilton and Whitman. Perhaps there is not a plan to divide Eckstein, but to have a better draw to Addams. Or, perhaps Addams will be an overflow school for all the north end.

I have to say that I really really like the Eckstein boundary. It is far more inclusive and more equitable than the old system. I am hearing from many far north families who feel the same.

It looks like many schools will get less diverse-especially Hamilton.
adhoc said…
Cas you can't only look at Hamilton. Look at Eckstein, it will get MORE diverse now that it will draw from lower income neighborhoods far north (northgate/Lake City/Cedar Park/Olympic Hills). Bagley will also be much more diverse. As will be many south end schools. And Madrona. And Leschi.....to name a few.

Looking at the charts Eckstein goes from their current 14% FRE up to 25%. Meanwhile Hamilton is going from 58% FRE down to 12%.

As I predicted there are some big changes in demographics in the north.

Eckstein's demographic change seems like a manageable and reasonable one, however Hamilton's demographic change is tremendous. From 58% FRE to 12%! They added APP, plus some affluent neighborhoods like Laurelhurst, Windermere, and south Bryant to their draw, and at the same time cut out south end transportation.

Wow.
