Seattle Schools This Week

This week starts the community meetings about the Strategic Plan.  I also received this info from a reader:
  • Open Enrollment processing will be completed and information on next year's assigned students downloaded on Friday, April 12th.
  • Information on assignments and waitlist status will be available to families beginning at Noon on Monday, April 15th.  You will be able to access this information on-line or by calling the automated phone line, 206-252-0212.
  • Individualized letters will be mailed the week of April 22nd to anyone who submitted an Open Enrollment application.
Monday, April 1st
Strategic Plan community meeting at Eckstein Middle School from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  (Interpreters available in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Amharic and Tigrigna)

Tuesday, April 2nd
Strategic Plan community meeting at Chief Sealth International High School from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  (Interpreters available in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tagalog, Amharic)

Wednesday, April 3rd
Community meeting with Director McLaren from 9 am-10:30 am at Alki Elementary School.

School Board meeting starting at 4:15 p.m.  Agenda 

Saturday, April 6th 
Strategic Plan community meeting at Garfield High School from 10 am to noon.  (Interpreters available in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tagalog, Amharic and Tigrigna)

College Bound Scholarship Conference
University of Washington
Mary Gates Hall
9:00am-12:00pm
Check in begins at 8:15 a.m.

All College Bound Scholarship students (and parents) in grades 9-12 are encouraged to attend.

At this event students and parents will:
  • Learn about the steps you need  take to access your College Bound Scholarship.
  • Learn about financial aid, other scholarship opportunities  and the  college admissions process.
  • Explore tables at the college and youth services fair.
Light refreshments will be provided. Giveaways and prizes available for students!

Also, just to note - the Seattle Times has now instituted their subscription program.  I am not buying a subscription to the Times and, even if I did, I probably could not provide you with a link to any story if you didn't have a subscription.  I don't know if the Times considered how other news sources drive readers to their webpage.  So, if there's a story in the Times, we are unlikely to be reporting on it here.

Even the NYT grants readers a number of articles to read for free every month.
Im surprised the Times didnt opt for that.

You are missing out on Lynn Varner editorial SB 5242 (the so-called "forced placement" bill) as I write.

On the one hand, I am guessing you could probably guess exactly what it says without reading it, but on the other hand, when there is actual news, the readers on this blog will have to bear the responsibility to keep up.

Frankly, I wonder without you writing your well-reasoned opposition to Lynne Varner's usual ed reformer pieces in the Times, I'm worried that the non-ed reformers will lose a strong voice.

Thanks Mary but actually someone in the comments section of the last Varner editorial made a good point - why don't we all just ignore her? She has virtually nothing valid to say so why even listen?

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). There are only three of us speaking about the Green Dot resolution asking the City to not grant the zoning departures that Green Dot has requested.  It's me, long-time watchdog, Chris Jackins, and the head of the Washington State Charter Schools Association, Patrick D'Amelio.  (I knew Mr. D'Amelio when he headed the Alliance for Education and Big Brothers and Big Sisters; he's a stand-up guy.)

Who Is A. J. Crabill (and why should you care)?

Why You Should Care Mr. Crabill has found quite the acolyte in Director Chandra Hampson. In the course of discussions over SOFG, she says his name over and over, "A.J .says we...." Now that's not too surprising given the direction the district is heading and that it is Mr. Crabill's work with the Council of Great City Schools is how we got here. But it appears that Mr. Crabill is working very closely with Hampson and we know she wields some amount of power over the majority of the Board. Mr. Crabill is going to continue to work with the Board as SOFG is instituted in SPS. In fact, his role may become more public as it did at one SPS Board meeting in the spring where he was on the phone during the meeting and suggested the Board stop the meeting to "self-reflect." I also noticed that in a district in South Carolina, when things weren't going to plan, he blamed the Board for not following SOFG to the letter. Look for that to happen here if Board members w

Why the Majority of the Board Needs to be Filled with New Faces

This may only be a partial list of reasons; please, add anything else in the comments. The deadline to file to run for the Board is May 19th. Entire Board Majority NOT vetting the Superintendent in any way, shape or form. Even the Seattle Times thought that was wrong.  It was just absolute hubris and it was wrong. For the second time in just over a year , board members voted to negotiate a superintendent contract during a special meeting with no opportunity for public comment. This time, they showed an even deeper disregard for their responsibilities as public servants: Aborting a national search for a new superintendent and denying Interim Superintendent Brent Jones a chance to show students, parents and taxpayers that, indeed, he is the best person for the job. Government bodies can’t fast-forward through transparent processes just because they think they know the right answer.
