Budget Work Session Update

There was a little confusion over how the Work Session/Public Hearing would go before tomorrow's Board meeting. According to the Board website:

The Work Session will start at 4 p.m., recess at 4:30 p.m. for the Public Hearing on the Construction Management Exit Conference, reconvene when that is done and adjourn at 5:30 p.m.

As I previously mentioned the Public Hearing consists of the reading of the legal wording of the hearing and then any public comments. Usually it's just me and Chris Jackins so that would make it pretty quick (unless many more people show up).

But overall, this Work Session probably will have just about an hour to figure out what to do with the $3.3M.

Kay SB just sent out a mass email asking for input on the $3.3 million,
"Based on our last work session, we can possibly make some new priorities. I am sure the Board would be glad to hear from you!"
What would be an effective response on that?

Chris Jackins is probably on top of this, ( I hope) cause my laptop monitor is not large enough to read all this info easily-
but this was a new website ( to me) that I found when I was looking for info on comparing new construction expenses between districts

Yup, and the district will tell you that they can't meet those costs because blah, blah, blah. They always have an excuse about why we do things differently from the rest of the country.

I think the rest of the Board and the staff aren't going to love Kay for doing that but I do. It's our money; why not have a say in what we do with it?

restore elementary counselors to the weighted staffing standard. Elementary counselors work proactively on school climate and student relations and they also address a ton of crisis situations. It's terrible to think of all that stuff going unaddressed in the future.

Two things:

Tell Kay to have the money go to protect the classroom. Whether is is Pay for K or elementary counselors or any other of many priorities.

The other is that staff probably have their own ideas and will likely be very persuasive in what they say. I would love to be surprised to hear a cut restored that helps the classrooms directly.

I wouldn't call Kay a "rebel" as much as an honest person who uses common-sense logic and doesn't take district BS at face value.

Then again, I can easily understand how that might feel rebellious in the context of the existing Board.

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

MEETING CANCELED - Hey Kids, A Meeting with Three(!) Seattle Schools Board Directors

 Update 2: So I have seen a message from President Liza Rankin on why she, Director Evan Briggs, and Director Michelle Sarju backed out of this meeting.  In a nutshell: - She says there was no organization to the meeting which is just not true. They had a moderator lined up and naturally the board members could have set parameters for what to discuss, length of meeting, etc. All that was fleshed out. - She also claimed that if the meeting was PTA sponsored, they needed to have liability insurance to use the school space. Hello? PTAs use school space all the time and know they have to have this insurance.  - She seems to be worried about the Open Public Meetings law. Look, if she has a meeting in a school building on a non-personnel topic, it should be an open meeting.
