New principal at Roxhill announced (via West Seattle Herald):

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda has named Sanhica Washington as the new principal for Roxhill Elementary School, replacing the recently promoted Carmela Dellino. Dellino was named as Executive Director for Seattle Public Schools West Seattle Region last month. Dellino leaves the school in great shape having coordinated and overseen the recent T-Mobile makeover at the school.

(About the T-Mobile makeover:

The sad condition of Roxhill Elementary School got an impressive facelift on July 26 as 300 Seattle and Bellevue based T-Mobile employees brought their best makeover efforts to the school. The effort, part of a national community outreach program called "Huddle Up" had volunteers painting, planting and beautifying the school concentrating on creating a T-Mobile After School space.

That space is now a customized afterschool area stocked with furniture, school supplies, books and games.

The workers painted murals, constructed shelving and cubby storage spaces, and created outdoor games and playground graphics.
Thank you, T-Mobile!)

Friday is the big day for our PTA friends at Rainier Beach High School being honored as Champions of Change at the White House and here's some more goings-on from that event via SPS:

To connect with PTA members around the country, Director of the Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Munoz with participate in a live “Open for Questions” event moderated by National PTA President Betsy Landers. The PTA is soliciting questions from their members about child advocacy and education through PTA.org and also on Twitter with the hashtag #WHPTA.

Watch the events live and learn more at WhiteHouse.gov/Champions. Live stream events include PTA leaders briefing at 9:30 a.m. EDT, “Open for Questions” online Q&A at 12:00 p.m. EDT and the Champions of Change event at 2:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, August 10. People around the country can join the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #WHPTA.

I was able to announce this accomplishment at an I-1240 debate today and people around the room were very excited.  It is a great example of a school community working hard to break a cycle that wasn't working for their students AND to show that it is a community that knows its students and their needs that can best serve them.
