Busy First Week for SPS (and Superintendent Enfield)

The meeting schedule for this week starts on Wednesday but there are quite a few meetings going into the weekend. All of these meetings should be interesting because of the turn of events last week and the shake-up of personnel. I'm looking for new talk and not more of the same. I don't want to walk into any of these meetings and see business as usual posing as a calming balm for our troubles.

Wednesday, March 9th
  • Executive Committee meeting from 8-10 a.m.
  • Work Session on Quarterly Review of Strategic Planning - 4:00-5:30 p.m. I would hope to see here what the pull-back on this will be.
  • Executive Session on Superintendent Review - 5:30-6:30 p.m. Not sure if the Board will still have this closed session. Maybe they will and use the time to consider other open positions at the top of SPS. Or they may not have it and extend the Work Session.
Thursday, March 10th
  • Audit and Finance Committee meeting - 4-6:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 12th
  • This is odd. I know the last time I checked there were to be at least 3 Board community meetings and yet I only see Sherry Carr's meeting from 8:30-10 a.m. This might be because of the...
  • Board Retreat from 12:30 -5 p.m. I'm sure this is new and probably because of the current circumstances.
  • There's also a Family Symposium: From Cradle to College and Career from 9:30 am to 2 p.m. at Ballard High School. Here's a link to the workshop schedule. For more information, contact Bernardo Ruiz, Family Engagement Manager, at (206) 930-0693
  • This is also the day when the state legislators are having their LegislativeTown Halls. Here's the schedule for the Seattle legislators (I believe Senators and Reps from each district will hold their Town Halls together.)

District 11 - Rep. Hasegawa

10:00 (coffee and donuts), 10:30 (town hall) at the Georgetown Campus of South Seattle Community College, meeting rooms C110/C111 (6737 Corson Ave South)

Did anyone else see Robert Mak's UpFront just now? Dr. Enfield's first non-softball interview. A very poor performance for someone who has been given this level of responsibility. She seemed to not know how to answer Mak's first two questions -- Sundquist had to step in to save her. This does not bode well. . . .

A reliable source told me over the weekend that the new COO will be announced today (Monday). It sounded from the brief resume I heard that the person hired is local and has made a second career in retirement of cleaning up troubled districts. I did not get a name.

I could have mis-heard, so don't take this as gospel.

From the 3/2 board meeting, Director Martin-Morris stated he was moving his 3/12 community meeting to 3/19 due to the conflict with the board retreat. I think the retreat has been on the calendar for a while so no idea why he just noticed.

Lessee, Board retreats are "public meetings", right? Can anyone observe?

I will be watching the quarterly Strategic Plan review with interest.

If the Board is really serious about fulfilling its duty to oversee, the review will be a comprehensive review of every Strategic Plan project and initiative with the timeline, budget and current status of each one.

After all, you couldn't really call it a Strategic Plan Review if it didn't contain those elements - at a minimum.

Surely all of these information is readily available, isn't it? Surely there is a comprehensive list of all of the Strategic Plan projects and initiatives, isn't there? Surely there is a timeline and a budget for each one, isn't there? Surely the status of each project is known, isn't it?

So why isn't all of this uploaded to the District web site and why isn't it provided to the Board as part of the Quarterly Update?

Yes. Board retreats are public meetings. I've been to a number of them. Bring a water bottle.

I just called Mark Teoh's office to ask a question about the upcoming Strategic Plan Update and the promised changes in the School Reports, and I was very surprised to hear Brad Bernatek's voice on the voicemail.

Pegi McEvoy was named chief operations officer earlier as well, according to the same article.

Like I said before, anyone who answers questions questions with "So..." is NOT answering the question.

I would lay down a $100 bet that Brad Bernatek still works at JSCEE...
