Tomorrow starts the Washington State PTA convention. It runs for three days but the voting sessions are all tomorrow night, Friday the 4th. The voting sessions start at 6:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Inn at Seattle Airport in SeaTac.
If you are going, be sure you have your voting credentials signed by your PTA President. You will not be able to vote otherwise.
Here is the voters guide that lists the resolutions to be voted on:
This May, voting delegates to the WSPTA convention will vote on one proposed amendment and three new proposals.
Arts Education in Public Schools and Washington State 5.3 Alignment of Sleep Requirements for Optimum Health with School Start Times Subsidizing Certificated and Classified Staff Salaries Equitable Educational Opportunities
Resolved, Washington State PTA will promote expansion of choice by supporting innovative schools -- including non-profit charter schools -- where they are supported by the local community and when they reflect the positions and principles of National and Washington State PTA, and when they adhere to and comply with applicable laws and guidelines set forth for other public elementary and secondary educational institutions.
Now, as I have pointed out previously, the charter school bill introduced in the Legislature this past fall, did NOT reflect the positions and principles of National PTA or Washington State. And yet, WA State PTA still pushes this position (apparently hoping a better bill will come along).
That Supplemental Authority against Equitable Educational Opportunities is a review of a report about CMOs. I have not read this one all the way through yet. I'm not entirely sure if it is pro or con.
Guidelines for submitting statements in support of or opposition to proposed resolutions or bylaw amendments
In order to make sure that delegates to the Washington State PTA Convention have the opportunity to consider a range of views on the issues to be debated, members may submit statements in support or opposition to any of the proposed resolutions and bylaws changes that have been put forward for consideration. Proposed ‘pro’ or ‘con’ statements must be submitted to the Washington State PTA Office to be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012. As outlined in more detail in the link below, Washington State PTA will publish and distribute no more than one ‘pro’ and ‘con’ statement on each proposed resolution or bylaw amendment.
