Thank You Teachers

It's Teacher Appreciation Week.

Give a shout-out to a special teacher in your life or your child's life this week (even in this space).  Or even a whole teaching corps at one school.

I know that many PTAs always have special events for this week but basically, it's saying, outloud, "Thank you and you matter in my child's life."

I want to kill two birds with one stone this week (Mother's Day is next Sunday) and thank my mother-in-law, a decades-long teacher at the best performing high school in Missouri, former city PTA President, who has listened to my disappointments, adventures and challenges with the school PTA, and teaching staff.

Although, as she is the teacher I've known for the longest time and best understands my child therefore she is the metrestick by which all other teachers are measured. She does clue me in as to what is dysfunctional and what is to be expected in US public schools, and validates my expectations and struggles, and helps me understand the positions and workloads of the teaching staff while simultaneously supporting my advocacy for her grandkid's optimal education.

Our child is in her 3rd year at Jane Addams, and has had excellent teachers three years in a row. I can't believe how hard these people work, and how much they care about every child. It's humbling.

Teachers (and parents/community members): find out what other educators all over the country are thinking/dealing with...

I believe myself and TFT (co-admins of the public education FB page MisEducation Nation - Miseducation Nation) are guests on tomorrow evening's #SOSchat on Twitter.... 6-8pm Pacific Time.... really cool getting to "talk" to people all over the country about saving public education.... some of the biggest 'names' in public education have been guests...

Why dont you join in? You need a twitter account.... once you have that, search for #soschat .... save the search... contribute to the discussion/talk directly to people- all you have to do is add the hashtag #soschat to anything you type in/tweet...

Spread the word...

I value and respect teachers.... have had wonderful teachers myself and all of my children have been blessed with amazing people giving of their love, energy, time and knowledge, in public education in three different countries...

I think we as a society would really give teachers the message that we truly value and appreciate them when we pay them as much as we do other professionals, so that they dont have to worry about meeting their financial commitments and so that many dont have to work a second or third job just to make ends meet...

my housemate is a 4th year, fully trained, certificated kindergarten teacher with quals in spec ed as well as general ed; she teaches 42 children every day, with half of them on IEPs and her base salary is $32K....by the time she pays her student loans and her commuting costs, there is nothing left... and she has a family of her own and a mortgage to take care of....

I'd like to thank all of the dedicated teachers at Whitman Middle School and Loyal Heights Elementary. Special thanks to those teachers at LHE who donated sick leave to another teacher in need.

Don't forget to email your child's teachers. I did, and got some nice, appreciative responses.
