Upcoming BTA IV Levy Meetings

(At a recent Work Session, the listing for what BTA will do was decidedly heavy on the technology side.  If your building has real building needs, you might want to attend one of these meetings or give input.  Always cc your district Board director.)

Seattle Public Schools is hosting five community meetings to share information about our upcoming Operations Levy and our Buildings, Technology, Academics/Athletics IV (BTA IV) Capital Levy which will be submitted to Seattle voters in February 2016.

The Operations Levy renews every three years, represents nearly 25% of the District’s annual general fund budget and supports basic educational programs not fully funded by the state.

The Buildings, Technology and Academics IV (BTA IV) Capital Levy renews every six years and funds hundreds of small renovations and major maintenance projects, as well as technology, academic and athletic initiatives at our school buildings.

Staff members will present information, ask for comments and answer questions.

Well, one thing this levy should do is make sure that school programs are properly funded. Why spend money on tech when the IB programs that are doing so well need money just to stay afloat? Give them more money and more students can participate, breaking down more barriers and ensuring all students get a chance to thrive.

Or the levy could fund more support staff so that kids get enough lunch and recess time.

I'm sure there are plenty of other no-brainers here, rather than more tech to facilitate teaching to the test.

Or... the BTA IV levy could actually fund deferred maintenance projects in actual BUILDINGS?

During some of the heavier rains this winter it rained INSIDE my kid's building. It doesn't do much good to load a bunch of tech into a classroom, only to have it drenched!

Thank goodness we had a mild, relatively dry winter!

Keep the "B" in BTA IV!
