A Message from your Board of Directors...
Dear Friends of the Edmonds School District,

The School Board will interview six semi-finalist candidates this Saturday, March 19, at Edmonds Woodway High School, Great Hall, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are starting at 8:30 a.m., instead of 9:00 a.m. as previously noted. The meeting is open to the public and observers will be able to provide written feedback.

The six semi-finalists are:

Dr. Deb Clemens, Superintendent, Cheney, WA
Matt Handelman, Superintendent, Coeur d’Alene, ID
Dr. Flip Herndon, Associate Superintendent, Seattle, WA
Dr. Kris McDuffy, Superintendent, Arlington, WA​
Dr. Carolyn O’Keefe, Deputy Superintendent, Northshore, WA
Dr. Chrys Sweeting, Assistant Superintendent, Puyallup, WA

After the initial round of interviews, the candidate field will be narrowed to three. The finalists will be in the District March 28, 29, and 30 … one candidate each day, where they will have the opportunity to tour schools and meet with staff and administrators.

There will be a Community Public Forum to meet the three finalists on March 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mountlake Terrace High School Theater. Community members will have an opportunity to ask questions and complete feedback forms to share with the School Board. If you are unable to join us at a Forum, it will be streamed live. Interesting that Edmonds allows the public to come listen in to the interviews with individual candidates.

I'm nervous about losing the captain of the capacity ship, even if he's having a difficult time steering it. I have to give him credit for looking ahead and getting some plans in place. It's going to be a beast for anyone.

"...credit for looking ahead and getting some plans in place"??? Which plans are these exactly? Last I heard he was essentially telling schools to just deal with the overcrowding, that there were no plans to provide relief anytime soon.

I'll just say that perhaps - because we have a new Board - this may provide for more input from school communities on what happens. Or, the Superintendent can double-down on what staff wants but I think that many things should be on the table for discussion given the not-so-stellar capacity management so far.

I agree interesting they let them meet. I wish SPS did more of that; I don't understand the secrecy.

That said, Maybe it is my line of work, but I wouldn't jump from "open to take on a promotion role" to be the same as "wanting a new job". There aren't that many superintendent positions in Seattle radius. Wouldn't anyone who wants that role at sometime have to be open to openings, even if they are happy or otherwise like their current job, especially if they are being recruited for it (I have no insight there, just bringing up an idea). I talk about this all of the time at my field (tech jobs) when we go after passive candidates; very different process and timing than actively searching.

This is typical Flip Herndon - don't stay anyplace for more than a couple of years. Go back through his past work history. He's been in many districts and in many different capacities. He stays long enough to make it look like he was working hard, then moves on when it looks like there might be a little heat, leaving others to clean up the mess he avoided tackling. He's been a supe before, he's been a principal, he's been an assistant principal. He can talk the talk, but the substance tends to be lacking.

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

Thanks to all for the correction. end of update   I suspect some who read this post will be irate. Why do this? Because the district seems very hellbent on this effort with no oversight skid marks from the Board.    To clearly state - I do not believe that closing 20 schools is a good idea. I think they hit on 20 because they thought it might bring in the most savings. But the jury is still out on the savings because the district has not shown its work nor its data. MEETING CANCELED - Hey Kids, A Meeting with Three(!) Seattle Schools Board Directors

 Update 2: So I have seen a message from President Liza Rankin on why she, Director Evan Briggs, and Director Michelle Sarju backed out of this meeting.  In a nutshell: - She says there was no organization to the meeting which is just not true. They had a moderator lined up and naturally the board members could have set parameters for what to discuss, length of meeting, etc. All that was fleshed out. - She also claimed that if the meeting was PTA sponsored, they needed to have liability insurance to use the school space. Hello? PTAs use school space all the time and know they have to have this insurance.  - She seems to be worried about the Open Public Meetings law. Look, if she has a meeting in a school building on a non-personnel topic, it should be an open meeting. It appears that Rankin is trying, over and over, to narrow the window of access that parents have to Board members. She even says in her message - "...with decisions made in public."
