From The Guardian, kids of today can't run as fast as their parents.

On average, it takes children 90 seconds longer to run a mile than their counterparts did 30 years ago. Heart-related fitness has declined 5% each decade since 1975, for children aged 9 – 17.

If you have a girl, you might want to watch this video of a young woman who gives voice to body image issues.  If you like powerful storytelling, it's also a must-listen.  It appears to be a performance competition/show and the crowd is with her as she gets deeper into her story.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to take other language classes in high school for credit, other than the ones offered? Perhaps online? My daughter wants to take Chinese and it it not offered at our assignment high school. Any thoughts or experiences you all could share? Thanks in advance!

LL, my daughter took an online French course through BYU over the summer to get a needed credit. You should be able to do something similar through an accredited school/university. Your school counselor should be able to help. I don't know if your daughter will be able to do the class during school time, though.

Here's a copy of the Counseling Services Manual. Info on Alternative Courses of Study starts on page eight. She'll need to get permission before the class starts in order to receive credit. The form is probably available online on the counseling page of the website.

An added bonus is the possibility of arranging her schedule so that she has no first period class!

5If you are willing to pay for it and want one-on-one, Brightmont Academy offers some languages for credit. I know of one student taking Spanish there. My child took Geometry there for credit as the BYU online Geometry is awful. I have heard that other BYU online courses are okay. Like the online courses you do have to have the school accept the class. Talk with your child's counselor.

Researching, you might also get useful information from Tracy Libros. Her info is likely broken down by attendance area school and/or census tract rather that official Seattle neighborhood, though.

Eric B - Thanks for the language info. I looked at the BYU info and they have a French Year 1, Part 1 and French Year 1, Part 2. Did your daughter need to take both for 1 year of high school credit, and how many hours a day/total days did the course take?

MSParent, she took both parts of French 2 for a year's worth of credit. It took an hour or two per day over about 8 weeks to get it all done. It wasn't that big a hassle, although the final exam was kind of a pain since it was hard to get everything set up right for the counselor to proctor. In their defense, it was in the middle of the school registration disaster at the beginning of the school year.

The speaker list is up for the Board meeting tomorrow; not as packed as I thought with just four people on the waitlist. The majority of the speakers are speaking on high school boundaries (with several wanting to talk about Ballard High). There are only three of us speaking about the Green Dot resolution asking the City to not grant the zoning departures that Green Dot has requested.  It's me, long-time watchdog, Chris Jackins, and the head of the Washington State Charter Schools Association, Patrick D'Amelio.  (I knew Mr. D'Amelio when he headed the Alliance for Education and Big Brothers and Big Sisters; he's a stand-up guy.)

Breaking It Down: Where the District Might Close Schools

Update 2: an absolutely fabulous interactive map made by parent Beth Day (@thebethocracy on Twitter - she covers Board meetings and is fun to read).   end of update    Update 1: Mea culpa, I did indeed get Decatur and Thornton Creek mixed up. Thanks to all for the correction. end of update   I suspect some who read this post will be irate. Why do this? Because the district seems very hellbent on this effort with no oversight skid marks from the Board.    To clearly state - I do not believe that closing 20 schools is a good idea. I think they hit on 20 because they thought it might bring in the most savings. But the jury is still out on the savings because the district has not shown its work nor its data. I suspect closing schools and THEN leasing/renting them is the big plan but that means the district really has to keep the buildings up.   But this district, with its happy talk about "well-resourced schools" is NOT acknowledging the pain and yes, grief, that is to come fro

Seattle School Board Meeting, Wednesday, September 18,2024

Please let us know if you attend the rally before the meeting.  Seeing photos from Twitter; looks like a good crowd at the rally. The West Seattle Blog is there reporting.  I am going to attempt to live blog so you will see abbreviations, spelling/grammar errors, etc. I will clean it up but I think it is worth trying to do. I will be refreshing the page as I go.  I am sad to see that apparently President Liza Rankin is not even going to allow 10 people over the regular 20 to testify. Just five.  Also, right at the beginning, the Board has stuck in, after Board comments, a Progress Monitoring presentation. They could have put it at the end but they didn't. They think - in 45 minutes - they can do Superintendent comments, Board comments and this presentation. I doubt that public testimony will start on-time. Tone-deaf doesn't even cover it with Board leadership. To note, apparently the district scheduled the NE community meeting on closures on Rosh Hashanah which is October 2. I
